Understanding “Stated Supports”

When you receive your NDIS plan, you’ll notice that most of your funding gives you flexibility you can choose how
and where to use it within a category. But sometimes the plan will include what’s called a “stated support”.

What is a “stated support”?

A stated support is a support listed in your NDIS plan meaning you can only spend your plan funds on the supports
described. You can decide how you spend your funds on these supports, but you can’t use these funds to buy
different supports.

What does a “stated support look like?

To the right, you can see an exert of what a ‘stated support’
looks like in an NDIS plan. In this scenario, it is listed under
Improved Daily Living and it states the use for only
Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology.

But what if your needs are changed or a support is missed?

If your circumstances change and a stated support no longer
meets your needs, you’re not stuck forever. You can request a
plan variation or review to update your supports. However,
these processes can take time!

NOTE: You’re able to request FLEXIBLE SUPPORTS in all
plan categories.

How can I prepare/get the best outcome?

  1. Understand what a ‘stated support’ is and your rights
when it comes to plan flexibility.

  2. Collate appropriate evidence from your key providers (ie.
your therapists, SIL providers, Assistive Technology etc.)

  3. In your review meeting, be clear in the supports you
require and why. Relate them to your disability support
    needs and NDIS goals.

  4. Once a plan is approved, go through your plan in depth to
ensure you’re aware of the stated supports.

  5. If you’re unhappy with the outcome, you are entitled to
appeal an NDIS decision within 3 months.
