Changes to Art & Music Therapy

From 24 November 2025, the NDIS will introduce important updates to the way music and art therapy are funded. These changes follow the Independent Review of Art and Music Therapies, led by Dr Stephen Duckett, and are designed to ensure participants continue to access therapies that are both evidence-based and sustainable.

What is changing?

  1. Music & Art Therapy will remain in the NDIS

    • Despite pervious uncertainty, the NDIA have confirmed that Music
and Art Therapy play a important role in supporting participants
      within the NDIS sector.

  2. New Price Cap Introduced

    • From the 24th November 2025, the maximum rate for both Art and
      Music Therapy will be $156.16/hour.

    • This aligns with the current rate for counselling services, ensuring
      consistency across similar therapy supports.

  3. Qualified Providers Only!

    • Providers will need to be registered therapists affiliated with a
recognised association such as the Australian Music Therapy
      Association (AMTA).

    • This ensures that participants are recieving support from qualified
professionals with the right skills and experience.

What does this mean for Participants?

  • If you already have Art & Music Therapy approved in your NDIS plan and it has been assessed as reasonable and necessary, you will be able to continue to access this support.

  • From November, your therapists will need to meet the new registration requirements, and the service will be charged at the capped
    rate.

  • If you are seeking to add Art and Music Therapy to your plan, you may need to provide stronger evidence about how it supports your
    goals and daily living.
